Athi River, Kenya – PrideInn Plaza Hotel & Convention Centre reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability through a second tree planting exercise held at Lukenya Academy. This initiative follows the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed earlier this year between PrideInn Plaza and the school to support reforestation under the One Child, One Tree campaign.
As part of PrideInn’s long-term climate action strategy, the hotel chain has committed to planting 60,000 trees by 2030, contributing to Kenya’s national restoration goals and supporting biodiversity, soil conservation, and environmental education. The ongoing partnership with Lukenya Academy is a key pillar in driving this vision.
During the exercise, PrideInn Plaza staff joined students and teachers in planting 300 new seedlings across the school grounds. The activity not only improved the environment but also offered hands-on learning that helps nurture environmental responsibility among young learners.
Kenya faces a significant challenge with deforestation and forest degradation. Between 2001 and 2024, the country lost approximately 400,000 hectares of tree cover, contributing to substantial carbon emissions and environmental strain. Current forest cover stands at around 8.8 percent of total land area, falling short of national targets for sustainable land cover. These trends highlight the urgency of reforestation and community-driven conservation efforts such as ours.
Mr. Stephen, the Principal of Lukenya Academy, commended the continued partnership, stating, “The trees planted in January are thriving and have greatly enhanced the beauty of our school. We are grateful for PrideInn’s support and look forward to continuing this collaboration as we work together on the reforestation program and the development of our Arboretum.”
This initiative aligns with PrideInn’s CSR pillars on Environmental Conservation and Education. Both institutions remain committed to expanding this partnership and contributing to a greener, more sustainable future for the next generation.
